You Pull. I'll Push. From Monte Silver ! World Podcast Forum I am A director!

You Pull.  I'll Push.
How the RSS-Push Concept can Increase Data Usage Among Mobile Users

By Monte Silver

In analyzing why users have failed to adopt mobile data applications, as well as what must happen for such adoption to take place, three factors get cited the most:

The user experience must be simple

Content must be compelling
Low cost

This article argues that the common methods of delivering data services – mainly WAP Portal Pull - fail on all three counts and are the main factor behind low user uptake.   Background download solutions, similar to RSS podcast push in the iPod/PC domain,  address these factors by delivering full-length commercial-quality content directly to the handset without requiring any user activity, such as overnight.  Content consumption is offline and immediate.  Finally, as background delivery can take place when the network is empty, the cost of data delivery is zero allowing operators to launch affordable rich-media services.

It is common knowledge that the Pull mode of content discovery and consumption has failed for all but the die-hard users. Only the most committed users will spend five minute browsing countless WAP menus to download a ringtone or short video clip.  Those that do will do so infrequently, when they have a sudden urge.  For many, that urge will be a one time affair, ending after they see the bill – a few Euro, dollars or Pounds per transaction. When compelling content is easily available via the wireline internet for free, why should one have to struggle to find mediocre content, and pay dearly for it?  Indeed, most people do not and will not.

Background download offers an alternative.

What is background download?  Background download is the automatic delivery of content to the phone that occurs without the user having to do anything.  The content is delivered to the user while the user is asleep (for example), and the content is ready to be consumed when and where the user wants, even in areas without network connectivity (such as in the subway on the way to work).

Podcasting on the iPod is a background download service.  Users subscribe to specific podcasts, and each new episode is pushed to the user, to be listened to at the user's convenience on the PC or iPod.

Background download in the mobile world resolves the three major problems that WAP pull services suffer from.   First, the user experience is compelling and in fact better than the iPod experience.  With iPod, users must transfer each new podcast from the PC to the iPod, not a trivial thing to do each morning before heading off to work.  With mobile background download, the user wakes up each morning with the latest content already on the mobile phone ready to be consumed without the need to connect to the network.

Second, the content delivered via background download can be full length podcasts or TV episodes, unlike the short content available in WAP portals.  Why?  Unlike background download, WAP pull has three problems: (1) content pulled by the user off a portal is delivered and consumed in real time.  The user will not wait an hour or two to consume content while a large file is downloading.  Satisfaction must be immediate.  (2) Users want to consume content during the day, usually in congested areas. Mobile data networks are inefficient and the network cost of downloading large files in peak hours in congested areas is huge.  The operator/carrier must charge high prices for such downloads. (3) The chances of a poor data connection during a large download is high, rendering the user experience poor.

These problems vanish with background download.  Large files can be delivered overnight (or when the phone is in the user's pocket) with the user receiving a notification when the content is available.  Consumption is immediate.  Second, networks are empty at night so the network transmission cost is zero.  Third, with the phone stationary, the chance of transmission interrupts are reduced, and with build-in retry mechanisms when failures occur, delivery can be assured.

Finally, given the efficiency of delivering data overnight on empty networks, the cost of background push services can be drastically reduced.  Compare paying 2 Euro to download a one minute clip to paying five Euro a month for subscribing to five daily full-length podcasts as a major multi-national carrier/operator has just launched.    Which would you prefer?

Apple has proven time and again that it can identify and capitalize on consumer trends with cool user-friendly goods.  The iPod, which gave birth to podcasting, is just one example.  The iPod has succeeded where all operators have failed, and that is in proving that people do want to carry their digital entertainment with them.  Background delivery addresses the problems characteristic of most mobile services and has to potential in enabling rich-media services that are easy to use and inexpensive to enjoy.

My MISSION For My CRITICs [re: CONTENT]

For My Critics ! “more freedom less crap!”
Please be advised that this web site has been constructed at my own cost as a personal
vehicle to promote for the most part content of people I feel contribute to developing among
Other things the Social and Technical aspects of the World Wide Web ! I bring in feeds from
Other peoples web logs and do not claim the content to be created by me ! If you browse the site it
is obvious you will see this is fact ! I have devoted a Free Page to Mariner Software, because I use
their products and find them reliable and the company has excellent tech support ! When I use a certain feature in word-press to grab a website and post it I try and add a comment describing the page ! This should make it obvious it is some one’s web page not mine ! In my opinion this is not what Nerds call Scraping ! I have alway’s let the owners of the feeds know what I am doing to date
not one feed owner has said STOP ! They know my site has no affiliate links and I am not generating
revenue from their Content ! If you do have a problem please marshal.m1@gmail.com !

I just ended my 8 years as a customer with Verizon and switched to AT&T

I just ended my 8 years as a customer with Verizon and switched to AT&T

NEW YORK (AP) -- AT&T said Tuesday its first-quarter earnings rose 22 percent as its wireless division saw continued strong growth and the enterprise services division reversed a declining trend. http://www.nytimes.com/
It seems that every 18 months with Verizon my LG [ long gone]Phones
would quit working ! During the 8 years I put up with it and just got new phones ,but to get a discounted phone had to renew my contract ! Recently
my phone had started to fail ! I called Verizon and was quickly fed the party line!
Your contract expires in 5 months if you renew we can give you a phone at a discount or you can buy a new one at full retail if you don't renew your contract now! I new I was getting no where so I went to the Verizon store a mile from where I live ! As usual there were 10 employees and 3 customers, and the party line prevailed ! The rep looked up my account said" you have been a good customer and have an excellent credit history !  Credit history in Michigan is important since the majority of the residents in the state are Homeless and Jobless!  But no new phone at a discount unless I renewed !  I left the store and called two friends who had I Phone's with AT&T and also AT&T internet service and got glowing reports! AT&T gave me my 1400 minutes free phones and rollover service !  I added my AARP discount and saved at least 15% ! Also since I get a $175.00 early termination fee from Verizon AT&T picks up Half ! I may decide let Verizon sue me for the $175.00 ! I will be adding AT&T television and internet service soon !  I have friends who have Internet and TV and are also very satisfied! http://www.att-signup.com/att-002/att-index.html  This will also eliminate Comcast from my Life !

Sound Off Letter to an Editor

June 6, 2008 7:48 PM✓ The Tribune Royal Oak  Mi.  Sound-Off
I have lived in a few town's when they were small,  Coral Gables  Fla, Scottsdale Az, and Salem Oregon !  I now live in what used to be the Greater Detroit Metropolitan Area, in a small bedroom community out side of Detroit, Royal Oak Michigan ! While living in Salem Oregon the Local Newspaper was bought out by the Folks From USA Today and they shipped in a very bright  Floridian to be the Editor , Buddy Hayden.  Buddy understood how non natives distrusted [Newbies] so he went on a campaign to let all of us Unwashed  vent our feelings ! Buddy knew that Small Town Letters to the Editor Space and Comment's were  a popular read !
My Royal Oak Tribune has the same policy !  We the unwashed and misrepresented can vent our opinions, even when we don't make sense !  Reading the Sound-off may not be like reading Disturbing the Universe  by Freeman Dyson,  we of the unwashed are not like the Founders of Google educated in In Semantics, General Semantics, and Math ! But then Larry Page co-founder of Google is from Michigan and Google has an office in Birmingham Mi! Yes
We the unwashed can be proud ! Part of my daily fun is reading Sound-off !

Cure Media Blues

                                      Cure Media Blues !
To avoid the Media Blues I have developed a technique that work’s !
I am an early riser and my first priority is to turn on my computer then start the coffee !
I avoid turning on Detroit television because it depresses me when a Botox Bunny discusses the disease of the day or an anchor man grins while telling me who got  shot while I slept !  My E Mail click’s in and RSS  feeds bring in the NY Times Reader!  I may read at least one article then, I fire Up my browser and bring in the Royal Oak Tribune web site  http://www.dailytribune.com/ .  On the Tribune web site my first read is the technology column then politics and elections !  Later in the day when the Tribune is delivered , My first grab is Sound-Off !  I enjoy it because we the unwashed can vent our anger, joy or what ever we please ! I find the Editorial Staff at the Tribune makes an attempt to get as may  opinions in Sound Off as possible !  The Tribune and their web site are example of Old Media Embracing the New Digital Media ! The new Digital Media has contributors, like Chris Brogan, Steve Rubel, Dave Winer , who like the Tribune Web Page inform us with content and do not mirror the Old Police Gazette !
The Victoria Police Gazette commenced in December 1853 and was initially published weekly by the Victoria Police.
Originally the Gazettes for each state were not available to the public, but were produced for informing members of the police force and government officials. Today archival copies are a resource for historians because the Gazette provides early records detailing names members of the military and the police force, lists deserters from merchant ships, the armed forces and of wives and children. It also provides details of victims and felons, the names absconded convicts from Tasmania and New South Wales, along with reports of serious crime from South Australia.

Me And My Scrapes at marshalsandler.com

I have always  made it clear that  that my site is for my own enjoyment and a test site to play around with word-press widget’s  badges etc !   My policy is here http://marshalsandler.com/?page_id=1804  !
Since I make no attempt or care to generate revenue on the site , I am doing no revenue creation   by bringing in my favorite blogs !  It has been pointed out that I could be considered a scraper so what , the feed owners who I syndicate don’t complain!  I have a few items that I watch and have found that The Professional Bloggers like Steve Rubel, Christ Brogan and Jason Calacanis  really generate hit’s!
All of these three have branded themselves and each with a different style ! All have one thing in common three distinctive style’s ! As Social Media develops I think these Professionals will be a able to charge for bloggers to rent their feeds !  Especially to Newspapers who are losing market share due to lack of relevant connent !
